An 8-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel integrated paddle shifters will be offered on the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
According to General Motors, the new transmission will be able to compete with the best dual-clutch automatic transmissions in the world in terms of shift speeds.
The transmission was developed by GM, and will be built by the U.S. manufacturer. It should help improve the Corvette’s fuel-economy by about 5% compared to the current 6-speed automatic transmission ratings.
“The automatic transmission in the Corvette Stingray offers the comfort and driveability of an automatic, while providing manual control that improves the performance-side of the car,” said Bill Goodrich, chief engineer assistant for 8-speed transmissions at General Motors.
The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 presented at the International Auto Show in Detroit will also be equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The one fitted in the 2015 Corvette Stingray is equipped with a clutch and a torque converter, both unique and better suited for the 6.2-litre V8 engine of the Stingray.
Without making the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray a fuel-efficient car, we give General Motors kudos for trying to provide better fuel economy while not taking anything away from the Corvette’s sporty persona.
