2019 Ford Ranger: the new kid unveiled in Detroit

After several very quiet years of evolution and new-model development, the mid-size truck segment is once again growing.

In recent years, the market has seen a new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, as well as a new-generation Toyota Tacoma. Yesterday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Ford joined the party with the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger.

Advanced off-road and safety technologies for the 2019 Ford Ranger

Announced a year ago and already available in other markets, the 2019 Ford Ranger is expected to enter North America later this year, but Ford has not offered too many details on its new mid-size truck.

We know that it will be powered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that is already found in the Ford Focus RS and Ford F-150, but we still do not know its power or its towing capacity specs. The new 2019 Ranger will also offer the only 10-speed automatic transmission in its segment.

There will be three versions of the 2019 Ford Ranger, the XL, the XLT and the Lariat. It will also be possible to add the FX4 off-road package that includes a Trail Control system that controls braking and acceleration on an off-road trail, much like adaptive cruise control does on the highway.

The FX4 off-road package also includes a terrain management system, added protection for the underbody and shock absorbers adapted to off-road driving. An electronic locking rear differential is available as an option or standard on FX4 models, and the Ranger’s four-wheel-drive versions feature a two-wheel drive system as well as 4 Hi and 4 Lo modes.

A range of active safety technologies will also be featured in the Ranger. Examples include automatic braking, a lane keeping system, lane departure warning, a blind spot monitoring system and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.

It will be possible to connect to the internet through an integrated 4G LTE modem and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems will be available. USB outlets and AC outlets are also included.
