Nobody likes to have a flat tire. Some are luckier than others and have managed to avoid the scenario all their lives while others have been forced to replace their tire on the side of the road several times. Often in the rain when it’s cold out. What is certain is that a flat tire never occurs at the right time, but no matter if we are in a hurry or not, we must see to it right away.
“It is absolutely necessary to avoid driving with a flat tire. It will change the whole dynamics of the vehicle, and we risk damaging other components, such as the wheel, for example,” says a technical advisor at Morrey Nissan of Burnaby.
So, how will you know if your tire is flat? For starters, you will feel a slight vibration and your vehicle will respond completely differently. The steering wheel will feel heavier and you will definitely feel that something has changed when it comes to handling.
Then, if you lower the windows, you will most likely hear some sort of flapping sound coming from one of the wheels.
Ultimately, a flat tire that requires immediate attention is fairly easy to detect.
It is what we do afterwards that is important. As mentioned above, it is absolutely necessary to avoid driving with a flat tire. First because it’s dangerous and affects the performance of the car, and secondly, as this could damage several mechanical components, starting with the wheel, but also the suspension and shock absorbers.
So the first step is to find a safe place where were the car won’t be in the way. We then inspect the tire. If it is an air leak, it is sometimes possible to put air in the tire and go to our dealer, or use a a tire sealant. Otherwise, we can try to change the wheel yourself.
To do this, make sure the vehicle is on a flat surface. Then brace the wheels that do not need to be replaced, and partially loosen the bolts of the wheel that needs to be replaced. Place the jack at the appropriate lifting point and lift the vehicle. Remove the bolts and the wheel, and install the other wheel. Tighten the bolts and you can go back on the road.
When replacing the tire, make sure your other tires are not too worn. If this is the case, it is better to replace the four tires in order to get the best possible performance.
