GAC Motor at the 2018 North American International Auto Show

GAC Motor is planning for its future in North America

This is not the first time that a Chinese automaker rents out some floor space at the NAIAS. This time however, the vibe is very different. As is the product. I took the time to sit in and briefly look over all of GAC Motor’s product on the show floor and I must admit that the overall impression is of quality beyond what we’ve come to expect from a Chinese automaker.

GAC Motor GS8

GAC Motor, part of the Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd., is an automaker that built 500,000 of its own cars last year. They’ve been recognized on a number of occasions as one of the best amongst its peers on a number of occasions. It is with humble confidence that they intend to penetrate the American new car market in the 4th quarter of 2019. At the moment, they have design offices in California and an R&D center in Detroit.

Their plan is simple enough. They’ve targeted the American West Coast where they intend to introduce their version of a three-row large midsize crossover known as the GS8. Their naming structure consist of three series of letters (GA – Sedan / GM – Minivan / GS – SUV) followed by the numbers 4, 6 or 8 to indicate size or position in the hierarchy.

By the time they arrive in the US, their vehicles will look little like what they do in the gallery. The GS8 in particular will be all-new complete with a powertrain adapted to meet our expectations. At the show, they unveiled an all-electric urban utility vehicle named Enverge designed specifically for the US.

At the moment, the company has no plans for Canada but we nonetheless wish them Godspeed in their endeavor!
