When nearly all major players in the automobile industry introduce a brand new compact crossover in only a few years, you know something’s up. This segment is one of the, if not the fastest growing in the car business at the moment and there’s no slowdown to the expansion in sight. According to some, sales could could increase a hundred fold by 2020.
The latest to join the party is Kia and its new Stonic. Actually, Kia jumped in nearly 15 years ago (in North America) with its Sportage only to then add the cool in-betweener Soul. The Stonic is all about action, design, and frugality. As Kia puts it, it will be the most customizable vehicle it has ever put on the market.
The tiger-nose grille lines it up with the other Kia products but no other one features a targa-style roof. Up to 20 two-tone paint schemes will be available as will a number of small yet efficient powertrains. Engine sizes will range between 1.0-litre to a 1.4-litre petrol powered units while a 1.6-litre diesel will round out the selection. All of the above will motivate the front wheels.
According to Kia, the Stonic’s chassis, suspension and steering are tuned for having fun at the wheel. Behind it, passengers will have access to loads of infotainment technologies and a fully battery of safety features.
The Stonic will go on sale this fall in Europe. No word yet if we can expect it on our side of the Pond. Given its size and similarity to the aforementioned Soul, only the future will tell.
