Nissan IMx Concept: an electric and autonomous SUV unveiled in Tokyo

Based on the chassis of the new 2018 Nissan Leaf, the Nissan IMx Concept is a self-driving vehicle powered by a fully electric engine that takes the form of a sport utility vehicle with the cargo space and ground clearance that comes with it.

Still far from production, the IMx Concept nevertheless presents very interesting specifications on paper. According to Nissan, the SUV can travel 600 kilometers on a single charge, and its electric motor will develop 429 horsepower.

That’s not all. The Nissan IMx Concept is a fully autonomous vehicle that, at the touch of the button, hides the steering wheel in the dashboard and drives itself. If the driver ever gets bored, he or she can ask to have the steering wheel back.

The Nissan IMx Concept is still far from production, but it is clear that electrification and driving automation are at the heart of Nissan’s priorities. The manufacturer has promised a fully autonomous vehicle by 2022, and early this week it announced that it was joining Formula E starting in late 2018.
