This was to be expected what with Ford and Rivian and all kinds of others wanting in on this lucrative segment. The electric Chevy Silverado will be more than a one-trick pony though.
A 100% electric Chevy Silverado is an absolute must for GM if they want to retain any hope of remaining relevant in the full-size pickup segment. The big difference with GM’s efforts is that the platform undergoing development will serve at least ten new vehicles over the coming years.
This is the second time that General Motors officially announces the coming of an electric pickup. In our mind, this is due to the fact that everyone’s turned their attention to either Ford, Rivian or Tesla as far as EV trucks are concerned.
GM’s been struggling in the segment of late, losing the 2nd best-seller spot to RAM – this could be enough to strike serious fear in the heart of the besieged manufacturer. This announcement could revive some faith in the company.
The juicy bit behind the story is that General Motors President Mark Reuss said: “We can build everything on this [platform] from just three drive units: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or e-all-wheel drive,” to WardsAuto. This demonstrates that GM, like every other carmaker, hold lofty and ambitious EV plans for the near future.
As far as time is concerned, no word on exactly when we can expect the electric Chevy Silverado.
